from: Practice Smart Travel With Holiday Safety Tips

More people travel during the holiday season than any other time of year and thieves, pickpockets and other criminals know this. Therefore, you need to practice smart travel principles by adhering to some holiday safety tips so that you do not fall victim to the criminal element. In fact, these tips are applicable year-round so make note of them so that you are safe, no matter when you travel.

Car Travel

Many people travel by car to get to Grandma’s house for Thanksgiving or the in-laws for Christmas and should expect to share the road with many other cars in a variety of road conditions. Therefore, one of the first holiday safety tips applies to vehicle maintenance and what you should do before you set off on a road trip.

Before going on any trip, whether it is just overnight or even weeks, have your mechanic inspect your car and perform any needed routine maintenance. Tires should be checked along with the oil and other fluids for the vehicle to ensure that nothing goes wrong. Among the holiday safety tips to follow is inspecting your vehicle insurance and health insurance policy to ensure that all is taken care of in case of an accident.

Another of the many holiday safety tips for vehicular travel is checking the condition of the spare tire and ensuring that you have a small tool kit for emergencies. Make sure your cell phone is charged up and that you have the number for roadside assistance in the event you actually need it.

Other Travel Options

Ladies, try to not carry any personal, important information in your purse when you travel via airplane or any other public transportation. One of the most important holiday safety tips is to utilize a fanny pack or other contraption that can be belted onto your person as purses can be easily stolen.

Your wallet with identification, credit cards, airline tickets and more should be in a fanny pack that is secured via steel or other metal cable beneath the material as this will prevent thieves from using a knife to try and cut it off. Men should carry their wallet in the front pocket of their pants, as it is a lot more difficult for thieves to pickpocket the front pocket.

Other holiday safety tips include memorizing directions instead of wandering around with a map looking lost as this might attract the criminal element to you. Also, always park in a well-lit place, carry a personal security item like pepper spray and a whistle and know where the security guard or police station is located where you are traveling.

Among the other holiday safety tips to practice when traveling include not leaving your luggage unattended at any time and never open your car door to a stranger if you are stranded. There are countless other holiday safety tips you should follow for the protection of you and your family but the ones listed above can get your mind brainstorming on more.
